Is Your MEP a Junketeer?
Date 13/05/2014 14:32  Author webmaster  Hits 9633  Language Global

Many MEPs have a dirty little secret they don’t wish voters to know about - their frequent taxpayer funded junkets to exotic locations around the globe.

It is UKIP policy not to allow its MEPs to go on Delegation trips.

Most delegations in the European Parliament will go to such lengths to hide which MEPs took part in delegations that sometimes for meetings the list of MEP attendees is not present, but the people who they met are. For instance, this Delegation for the
Maghreb trip.

One of the few delegations which puts its MEP attendees in the public domain is the EU’s Delegation to the African, Caribbean and Pacific region (ACP). Minutes and attendees are listed in the EU Official journal. The ACP is a talking shop which has no legislative power – but it has great travel if you can get it.

Togo (November 2011)

A SHORT excursion to Togo, the poverty stricken republic in west Africa, by a group of 33 MEPs has cost British taxpayers almost £435,000.

The Togo trip in November 2011 was the most expensive in a series of visits by MEPs to developing countries.

In Lomé, the seaside capital of Togo, the MEPs stayed at the five-star Palm Beach Hotel.

Attended by Catherine Bearder, the Liberal Democrat MEP for southeast England, who was a member of the ACP delegation.  In the past two years Bearder has also travelled to Surinam in South America as part of a delegation to African, Caribbean and Pacific states

She also went to Apia (Samoa 18-20th July 2012) . Nice life if you can get it.

Kinshasa, Congo (30 November - 4 December 2010)

Euro MPs enjoyed dozens of taxpayer-funded trips and fact-finding missions, including an eight-day trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo costing £850,000 – to discuss poverty.

Tory MEPs Daniel Hannan, Nirj Deva, Martin Callanan, and Liberal Democrat Catherine Bearder were among 50 delegates on the trip.

During the November 2010 gathering in the African country’s capital Kinshasa, the group stacked up a bill of £17,067 per head.

It means taxpayers forked out more than £2,000 per MEP per day.

Tenerife (January 2010)

Shocking figures reveal a 64-strong ACP-EU delegation of MEPs had previously jetted out to Tenerife in January 2010. They racked up travel and hotel bills of £588,404 or £9,193 each, in one week. In comparison, a week in a junior suite at London’s Ritz Hotel is a snip at £3,928.
