• According to Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament, “the two great achievements of the European Union are the euro and freedom of movement”.
Only a Europe fanatic could see these as achievements. The euro has helped bring Europe to the edge of an economic abyss and open borders mean we have not just had hard-working decent migrants but benefits claimants and criminals too.
Nothing better illustrates how out of touch the European Union is than its planned “European Year of Citizens” in 2013. Its thrust is to enforce the idea of a European state by making all rights equally applicable.
All barriers must be removed so citizens can enjoy the social security, housing, health and education systems of others.
Anyone in the EU who hasn’t yet heard of soft-touch Britain will be informed of the golden opportunities that await.
We will shortly be celebrating Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee.
As well as contemplating the achievements of our ancient, great and civilised nation we should also contemplate just how low we have sunk by taking part in the “great European project”.
We no longer make our own laws nor control our own borders.
We should contemplate urgent action to restore our self-respect and self-government.
