UKIP candidate Jane Collins stormed to second place in the Barnsley Central by-election, trouncing the Tories, Lib Dems and BNP in the process.

Polling 12.1% of the vote in a relatively low turn-out of around 36%, Jane came in second behind Labour's David Jarvis, but beat the Tories by a whopping 30%. The seat has long been one of Labour's safest.

After the result was announced, a delighted Jane said: "What a magnificent result! The people of Barnsley have humbled Cameron and Clegg. They have shown tonight that it is OK to believe that this country deserves better. That people of this country must be listened to.

"Britain needs a government that listens to its people, puts its people first and puts towns like Barnsley higher on its agenda than the judges of Strasbourg and the politicians in Brussels.

"I am proud of the work done by my team and the many UKIP volunteers who have come to Barnsley to help on the campaign

"The coalition has been humbled in this vote, and UKIP’s vote is increasing steadily across the country."

UKIP Leader Nigel Farage, in Barnsley for the count last night said: "Today we can see that the Lib Dems are seen, rightly as part of the discredited political establishment.

"UKIP is a natural home for those who are fed up to the back teeth with the spin and evasions of our so-called leaders. UKIP is now the voice of opposition in this country. Over the coming weeks, months and years UKIP is poised to become the natural home for those dissatisfied with the political class.

"We offer hard work, straight talk, a commitment to putting the unheard voices onto center stage and a brighter independent future."
