In order to force through the AIFM  (Alternative Investment Fund Managers) Directive, the EPP Group (European People's Party) have organised a secret meeting from which most other political groups have been excluded, contrary to the rules of procedure of the European Parliament.

UKIP MEP Marta Andreasen, who sits on the EU Budget Committee said in response today: "I am disgusted to hear that secret talks are going on from which many of the political groups are excluded. It is undemocratic and completely lacking in transparency.

"The EPP, who wish to hyper-regulate Financial Services, are clearly so desparate to buy the approval of the European Council they are willing to act secretly and break the rules of the European Parliament.

"The AIFM measure is a terrible deal for the British financial services industry - we will fight it tooth and nail, but we prefer to do it on open ground. It is quite revealing that these people were happy to exclude the Europe of Freedom and Democracy Group as well as other political groups of the European Parliament. Secret deals behind peoples' backs should not be allowed to kill British Financial Services."

A
letter of complaint has been filed with the President of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, by ALDE MEP Wolf Klinz, underlining that this practice goes against the Parliament's Rules of Procedure (See Annex XX, Code of conduct for negotiating in the context of the ordinary legislative procedures, sections 3 and 5, at pages 208-209 - PDF)
