Up to 70 Conservative MPs will today defy the Prime Minister and vote for a referendum on Britain’s future in the European Union.
The move is likely to be the party’s biggest rebellion over Europe - which poses a difficult challenge for David Cameron’s leadership.
Tory backbenchers have been ordered to vote against a motion calling for a referendum on whether the UK should remain in the EU, leave it or renegotiate its membership.
Sky sources say the Prime Minister personally called some MPs over the weekend to persuade them to support the Government’s position, and there have been reports of heavy-handed tactics by the whips.
