FEARS of fresh empire-building at the EU were sparked yesterday amid claims that eurozone states are plotting a “euro treasury”.
Eurocrats are believed to be considering a dedicated new “finance ministry”, which could be based in Frankfurt or Paris.
It would further cement Franco-German power in Europe, leaving non-euro nations like Britain increasingly sidelined.
Officials played down the proposals from EU President Herman Van Rompuy.
They insisted his ideas were at a very early stage and were simply designed to administer the eurozone more effectively.
