DAVID Cameron was given a clear signal of the strength of Tory anger towards Brussels yesterday when activists packed a meeting on the European Union.
More than 200 grassroots Tories, MPs and members of the public crowded into the gathering organised by the Daily Express and the TaxPayers’ Alliance on the theme “We need to talk about Europe”.
Speakers made clear the case for a national referendum on whether Britain should quit the EU and urged the Tory leadership to recognise the growing public disquiet at the spiralling cost and lack of democracy in Brussels.
Tory MP Douglas Carswell, Daily Express chief political commentator Patrick O’Flynn and Tim Montgomerie, editor of the ConservativeHome website, all addressed the meeting.
It was part of the Daily Express’s crusade for British withdrawal from the EU, which was chaired by TaxPayers’ Alliance chief executive Matthew Elliott.
In a hard-hitting speech at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, Clacton MP Mr Carswell said: “Is it right that the political elite and mandarins in Whitehall make decisions of profound significance for the rest of us?”
