When Nigel Farage made certain observations about the State of Belgium, The Euro Comrades got very hot under the collar. Shock, horror there was in abundance at the suggestion that Belgium might be, well, something of a non-entity, country-wise.
This provoked the Comrades into launching themselves into full 'Suppression of Free Speech' mode (which it does whenever it can when confronted with opinions it does not like) and, to cut a long story short, punished Nigel by stopping 10 days worth of allowances. Sweet, polite Jerzy Buzek, who likes to present himself as a rather serious but nonetheless avuncular type, doled out the maximum fine that he could.
These quasi-legal proceedings were, of course, an absolute farce. Even before the ink was dry on his appeal, the Collaborationist Parties were all putting it about that they had already decided to deny that appeal, long before they had either heard the merits of it or had a chance properly to discuss it.
Then when the appeal was actually heard, who should be presiding over it but old Uncle Jerzy himself. The EU has either not heard of the rules of natural justice or, if it has, has chosen flagrantly to ignore them. In short, it is a cardinal rule of natural justice that you cannot be judge in your own cause. Thus, for Uncle Jerzy to sit in judgement on his own case was as flagrant an abuse of the rules of natural justice as you could wish for. Yet we expect nothing more from the EU to which illegality is but the meat and drink of daily life.
Anyway, Belgium......was deemed to have been insulted by Nigel on the grounds of it being something of a non-country, so many MEPs of Europhiliac bent came to its aid and comfort. How dare Nigel mention Belgium's gangrenous constitutional impasse that perpetually threatens the very existence of the Belgian State?
Sadly these enthusiasts were not privy to the very many emails that came in from not just Flemings but from quite a few Francophone Walloons as well, not to say from all over Europe, all expressing their fulsome support for Nigel and often being very rude about the Stae of Belgium. Very few, after the first burst of sanctimonious righteous indignation, expressed their support for the putrid state of Belgium (whose King, by the by, is not King of something called 'Belgium' but is 'Roi des Belges' or 'King of the Belgians', thus anticipating the situation in which he is very likely to find himself before too long, namely the notional head of state of one State called Flanders and another called Wallonia, both full, to put not too fine a point on it, of ex-Belgians.
Nigel, however, got it right as usual: as this report reminds us forcibly, there really are two Belgiums, a state of affairs which rather suggests that de facto the unitary state of 'Belgium' is very much a Non-country..
One of those Belgiums is deeply beloved by Europhiliac MEPs and Eurocrats as a founder member of the EU and home to its institutions of which nothing uncomplimentary may be said upon pain of punishment. And then there is the other Belgium, the real Belgium, whose fissiparous nature is evident to all who have eyes to see and ears to hear.
The Independent's report shows just how far things have gone when the Mayor and Council of Flemish can contemplate what are effectively immigration laws that exclude individual Belgians from house purchases on the grounds of their language.
Once such a system was practised in South Africa where it was called 'apartheid'. It made South Africa the pariah of the world. Now it is to be practised in Belgium, however, the silence of the Comrades is very striking. This is unsurprising. they are, of course, rank hypocrites and besides are far too embarrassed to have to look old Rumpy-Pumpy in the eye and ask what he is going to do about it all.
Meanwhile the stench of death continues to hang about the thing called 'Belgium'.
By the by, the Belgian Parliament is about to ban the burka in public places.......where UKIP leads Belgians (or should that be Belgium?) follow.
How very embarrasing for old Old Uncle Jerzy and all.......
