European Union climate chief Connie Hedegaard said some steelmakers are seeking too many free carbon permits in the next phase of the emissions-trading system, Het Financieele Dagblad reported today.
“It’s fair to say that if you look back at ETS until today, the steel industry has generated net revenue from trading carbon dioxide,” she told the newspaper in an interview. “The steelmakers say that’s over now. Well, that may be so, but they still get a lot for free.”
