PARIS (Dow Jones)--France prefers political sanctions to economic sanctions for European Union states that break the economic rules of the 27-nation bloc, a senior government official said Wednesday.
The official was speaking ahead of the European summit of heads of state Thursday, where European Council President Herman Van Rompuy will give an oral report on progress his task force is making on reforming the EU's economic governance.
"We have clearly indicated a preference for political sanctions," the official said. "While we don't exclude the possibility of economic sanctions, we don't think they are necessarily the right answer."
